Caribbean performing arts festivals have many dimensions from various influences of those who celebrate their heritage. Rooted in African traditions, our style of Carnival encapsulates a core cultural aesthetic value that links generations.
CACAB 50th Anniversary 2023 Anniversary dates indicate it's a time for joyful celebration. The 50th Anniversary of the Caribbean American Carnival of Boston is in August 2023. The historical timelines to such a notable occasion generally present much information about the travelled pathways from the beginning - to now. One can discern familiar features, and remarkable differences, that are revelatory when given some thought.
Several characteristics of our wide-ranging established customs are displayed all year round, and at the annual public events. Carnival time also has another highlight of importance: a legislative decree designates the closing period as Massachusetts Caribbean Week. Senator William "Bill" Owens, an African American, in 1991 cited people of the Caribbean as "distinguished residents of the state who have made significant contributions to life in Massachusetts." This astute statement is an admonition of the denigrating stereotype of Caribbean people being only street performers and workers in menial jobs.
His commendation came from observation and interaction. He engaged with individuals whose expertise was physical and intellectual. We were seen as present in a wide range of professions in the commercial, medical, academic, creative, legal/judicial, and military sectors in Massachusetts.
This year's commemoration of the journey we have made to the second decade of the 21st Century, brings to mind the founding team whom we acknowledge, always. We praise them without reservation. In consideration of the travails of the passage to be at this milestone, it is necessary to also recognize the creditable current circumstances achieved with dedication. Thriving entities require a demonstration of admirable attributes.
The writer has served on an array of business and social boards and participated in evaluating impactful leadership in the Diaspora. Based on those observations, a recommendation was made to a prominent NYC Caribbean organization to create a distinguished level of accreditation: Cultural Enabler. In 2006, it began a formal recognition of the role of trailblazers who were arts and culture presenters - but not performers; used business expertise; applied professional acumen; and functioned as community social leaders. Their work is acknowledged for its support of inspiration and the sustainability of high standards of Caribbean traditions in many facets.
CACAB's current distinctive leadership in various aspects shows resilience and fortitude of a Cultural Enabler. Shirley Shillingford's introduction of the Carnival planning committee to Senator Owens led to the 1991 Caribbean Week State Promulgation, a national historic landmark. Since then, her energetic management has steered the Boston Carnival team with a compelling, vibrant presence maintaining its financial stability. The annual programs are mission-centric and representative of all who identify with their Caribbean heritage, its authenticity, and faithful evolution, as time goes by. The President has been a visible, effective vocal champion for the organization. It understands the community's relevance and the impact of its activities to express and preserve the best of "all ah we". Exemplary attributes.
Freely, we moving on...
